An Indiana company recalled roughly 744 pounds of pork products due to potential contamination involving Listeria monocytogenes. This deadly contamination led the company, Fisher Packing Company, to recall any potentially contaminated products shipped throughout Indiana. The products were packed and distributed in late August, and have since been tested by federal officials to confirm the presence of Listeria monocytogenes.

Consuming food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can result in a serious infection, Listeriosis, which can cause serious flu-like symptoms and may be life threatening in some cases. Although there have been no reported illnesses yet, the United States Department of Agriculture supported the company’s full recall.

Statewide Pork Contamination

On September 28, 2019, the USDA released a statement informing the public that 744 pounds of ready-to-eat pork products distributed by Fisher Packing Company were contaminated by Listeria monocytogenes. The contaminated products were packaged on August 27th and distributed to retailers throughout Indiana.

All contaminated products can be identified by the establishment number “74SEIN” located on the USDA mark of inspection.

Contaminated products include Old Fashion Smoked Ham, Smoked Ham Shanks with Natural Juices, and Canadian Bacon. All of these products are included in lot code 19239.

The Danger of Listeria

Food contamination can always be harmful, but Listeria is particularly dangerous, especially for pregnant women, children, and the elderly. Exposure to Listeria monocytogenes can be extremely dangerous because it often results in the development of a Listeriosis infection.

Symptoms of a Listeriosis infection include:

  • Confusion
  • Convulsions
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Loss of balance
  • Muscle aches
  • Nausea
  • Stiff neck
  • Vomiting

If you or someone you love consumed one of the contaminated pork products and you experienced flu-like symptoms, like those listed above, seek medical attention immediately. Individuals with weakened immune systems, such as children or the elderly, face a particularly higher risk of infection, and the mortality rate has been found to be as high as 20-30% for these susceptible groups of people. Additionally, infections in pregnant women can result in extremely serious side effects, including miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery, or fetal infections.
