About Invokana
Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, developed Invokana to help individuals with Type 2 Diabetes. The drug is a sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, which means it triggers the kidneys to remove sugar from the body in an attempt to help the body deal with Type 2 Diabetes naturally. However, this inhibitor has been linked serious side effects.
FDA Warnings
Although the SGLT2 inhibitor is approved by the FDA, it has been associated with rare bacterial infections in the blood and kidneys. In 2015, the FDA released a black box warning, their most serious caution, in order to notify patients and doctors of the major risks associated with the drug. Specifically, the warning mentioned the development of ketoacidosis, a life-threatening condition that develops when the blood sugar levels become imbalanced.
The Dangerous Side Effects
Over the past few years, the FDA has received complaints about rare infections associated with SGLT2 inhibitors, but just recently, in August of 2018, the FDA issued a specific warning. In this release, the FDA cited cases of necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum, also referred to as Fournier’s gangrene, an infection that affects the genital area. In one case, a man had an amputation due to a severe infection after using Invokana for diabetes. Although these cases are rare, they can cause serious damage and may even result in life-altering problems.
In their statement, the FDA warns patients to watch for dangerous symptoms:
“Patients should seek medical attention immediately if you experience any symptoms of tenderness, redness, or swelling of the genitals or the area from the genitals back to the rectum, and have a fever above 100.4 F or a general feeling of being unwell. These symptoms can worsen quickly, so it is important to seek treatment right away.”
