Seeking Compensation for Gynecomastia Cases in Indiana

Risperdal, also known by the generic name risperidone, is an antipsychotic medication used in the treatment of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and autism. It is sold and manufactured by Johnson & Johnson.

What Is Gynecomastia?

Much like other antipsychotic medications, Risperdal has a long list of side effects. One of these side effects that consumers have been inadequately warned about, however, includes gynecomastia. Gynecomastia is the development of breasts in adolescent males. This condition of breast enlargement can cause severe psychological trauma in young males. These boys may also experience breast pain or nipple discharge.

How Can Risperdal Cause Gynecomastia?

The Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology published a study in 2006 which states, “Risperidone administered to adolescents at doses commonly used for the treatment of psychotic symptoms can strongly increase prolactin levels, with clinical consequences such as gynecomastia and/or galactorrhea.

There have been hundreds of lawsuits in several different states filed on behalf of affected adolescents and men suffering from gynecomastia. Johnson & Johnson settled one case on its first day of trial in Pennsylvania for an undisclosed amount and then the following month settled five more cases in Philadelphia.

There have also been allegations of illegal marketing activities between 1993 and 2004 by Johnson & Johnson according to the United States Department of Justice. These allegations involved the company not obtaining FDA approval before promoting the drug to doctors to prescribe Risperdal for children. Attorney generals from states including Kentucky, Texas, Montana, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, South Carolina, Arkansas, and Louisiana have either received or are in the process of receiving a settlement from Johnson & Johnson.

Male breast enlargement from gynecomastia can be treated with liposuction in mild cases, but in more severe cases, surgery may be necessary, including mastectomy. Adolescents may also need counseling to help them deal with the psychological effects.
