Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), or Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), is a crippling illness that causes intense pain in the feet, hands, and other extremities. RSD/CRPS often occurs after major accidents, such as a motor vehicle accident or a work-related accident where the traumatic injury causes damage to the nervous system or neurological system.
This chronic and progressive disease continues to affect millions of people every day. In spite of that, it is a very misunderstood disease with often complicated treatments and chronic, persistent symptoms. If you suffer from RSD/CRPS due to a work-related accident or injury, you may be entitled to financial compensation. Symptoms of RSD/CRPS
RSD is most commonly caused by traumatic head injury, but other causes are damaged nerves, injured extremities, and infections. CRPS has three stages and typically worsens over time. A doctor can diagnose CRPS through several methods—checking temperature and blood supply in the affected body part, bone scans, x-rays, and nerve conduction study.
Victims of RSD or CRPS will have chronic pain and may suffer from any of the following symptoms, including but not limited to:
- Severe burning feelings in the skin
- Changes in the bones and skin
- Abnormal sweating
- Extreme swelling of the tissues
- Sensitivity to touch
- Red skin
- Temperature hypersensitivity
- Reduced range of motion, increased stiffness in joints and decreased motor skills
Treatments for RSD include the TENS (transcutaneous electrical stimulation) surgical sympathectomy, chemical sympathectomy, psychotherapy, physical therapy, and drug treatments. The AAOS advises that early treatment is beneficial to RSD/CRPS and that it is important for patients to understand that the pain is not imaginary or simply “in their heads.”
