What Is A Truck’s “No-Zone”?
One of the causes of truck crashes in Indiana is when another vehicle is in one of a truck’s “no-zones.” No-zones for tractor-trailers refer to the areas of a big rig that may be called blind spots in other vehicles. These areas around the truck aren’t visible with mirrors alone, and truck drivers have to check their no-zones regularly, especially when changing lanes or turning. However, many drivers aren’t cautious and fail to check their truck’s no-zones. The result is sometimes a severe truck crash that could leave other motorists with serious or even fatal injuries.
Drivers in the Indianapolis and Evansville areas know how common large commercial trucks are on the roads. If a trucker changes lanes or turns without checking their no-zones, you could have a severe accident with life-changing injuries. Some of the common truck accidents that occur from no-zone or blind spot violations include:
- Rollover auto accidents
- Underride auto accidents
- Side-to-side auto accidents
- Rear-end collisions
- Pedestrian and cyclist accidents
If you are in a no-zone truck accident, call the police immediately and seek medical attention. Also, contact a truck accident attorney as soon as possible. The trucking company’s attorneys and accident investigators may attempt to blame you for the no-zone truck accident, so having legal representation is vital for your case.
No-Zones On Tractor-Trailers
There are three specific no-zones on tractor-trailers. The first is on the side, which is a blind spot. If you are driving by the side of a truck and cannot see the driver’s face in the side mirror, the trucker probably cannot see you. In this situation, a severe accident could happen if the trucker tries to move into your lane.
Another no-zone is directly in front of the truck. If a vehicle is too close to the front of the rig, the trucker may be unable to stop in time to avoid slamming into its back. There is also a no-zone behind the truck, which is also a blind spot. A vehicle following too closely behind the truck could lead to disaster if the rig suddenly stops or reverses.
Remember, the four no-zones around most commercial trucks are:
- Directly in front of the truck cab.
- Behind the truck – approximately two car lengths.
- Beside the driver’s door and about a car length behind it.
- Beside and behind the truck’s passenger door and approximately two car lengths behind it.
Why Are No-Zones Dangerous?
Every motor vehicle on the road has blind spots that can make driving more hazardous. However, because commercial trucks are so big and long, they have more significant blind spots that increase the risk of a severe accident. If a truck merges into your lane or hits you from behind when you’re in a no-zone, you could suffer a serious or fatal injury.
Seek Legal Representation If You’re Injured In A No-Zone Accident
Defensive driving around large trucks can help you avoid accidents by staying out of their no-zones when possible. However, commercial truck drivers must drive safely and check their no-zones. If a truck driver is negligent in checking their no-zones and hits you, the truck accident attorneys at Wagner Reese will seek compensation for your injuries and other damages. If your attorney can prove that the truck driver’s negligence caused the accident, you could receive compensation in a lawsuit.
Some of the common reasons no-zone or blind spot accidents occur are because of truck driver negligence involving:
- Distracted driving: Truckers spend long hours on the road and may pass the time by texting, watching videos, or browsing the Internet.
- Inattentive driving: The truck driver may violate their duty of care and not properly check their blind spots before changing lanes or turning.
- Driver fatigue: Truckers can only drive so many hours daily, but some drivers may break the rules. Fatigued driving leads to severe and fatal auto accidents that may involve no-zone and blind spot violations.
