In 2012, astronaut Neil Armstrong passed away following complications experienced from a coronary bypass surgery conducted at Mercy Health – Fairfield Hospital. After his death, Armstrong’s surviving family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the hospital for medical negligence and inadequate aftercare.

According to documents mailed to The New York Times by an unknown source, Armstrong underwent several procedures in a short period of time after an initial bypass surgery failed and implanted temporary wires caused internal bleeding upon removal. Only a few days after the procedures to address the internal bleeding and low blood pressure were performed, he passed away from the complications.

Although Mercy Health continually objected to any accusations of medical malpractice, a $6 million settlement was provided to the Armstrong estate two years later in 2014.
