Governor of New York Andrew M. Cuomo has fulfilled his promise to sign the Child Victims Act into law. This incredible step forward is a major, legal advancement for victims of childhood sexual assault. Coming forward demands an incredible amount of bravery and honesty, and the tragic reality is most victims are not believed when they speak up about abuse. Unfortunately, sexual abuse cases with minors almost always involve perpetrators who exploit their positions of power including relatives, teachers, religious members, etc., and organizations that cover up the abuse.  This inevitably creates an environment of fear and resistance to speak up within a timely manner.

The Child Victims Act extends the statute of limitations for victims to pursue civil legal action until they reach 55 years old. Most importantly, this act opens a 1-year window for anyone seeking to revive past claims, no matter how long ago the abuse occurred.

Shining a light on the people and institutions who have covered up and perpetrated these heinous crimes is vital for the betterment of our world. Thanks to this momentous progress, we as a society can now begin to hold wrongdoers accountable for their unimaginable, criminal acts.
