A Jeffersonville home spontaneously exploded last week, leaving 1 person dead and 2 others severely injured. William “Billy” Phillips died in the explosion according to the Clark County Coroner. The Jeffersonville Fire Department responded to the explosion just before 5 AM in the 900 block of Assembly Road in the Capital Hills neighborhood. Officials have ruled out the possibility of the residence being a meth lab and are tentatively considering the source of the explosion to be natural gas. Though it is unclear what caused the explosion, Vectren gas company has shut off service to 14 other homes in the area after confirming the original explosion belonged to a Vectren customer.

Currently, the Jeffersonville Police Department and Indiana State Police are investigating this tragedy. It is estimated up to 20 homes were damaged in the explosion and at least 5 will not be habitable for some time. Jeffersonville Fire Chief Eric Hedrick confirmed that responders are now in the process of conducting secondary research to ensure there are no remaining residents in the affected area. The injured victims are currently being treated at the University of Louisville Hospital and the deceased victim’s name has not yet been released.
