Construction sites are inherently unstable and dangerous. As such, construction sites are some of the most dangerous work environments for employees. In fact, 4.6 out of every 100 workers are injured or killed on construction sites throughout Indiana every year.

Below, we discuss some of the most common construction site injuries and what you can do if you have been injured at work.

The Fatal Four

Despite the fact that construction workers face a variety of hazards on their job sites, a majority of construction site injuries are a result of “the fatal four,” which include:

  • Falls

  • Electrocution

  • Struck by object

  • Caught in/between

As such, some of the most common construction site injuries include:

  • Traumatic brain injuries

  • Spinal cord injuries

  • Broken bones

  • Severe burns

  • Crushing or degloving injuries

  • Injuries requiring amputation

  • Wrongful death

What to Do After a Construction Site Accident

If you have been injured on your job site, you have several ways to recover compensation for your medical treatment, including:

  • Filing a workers’ compensation claim. Most workers recover compensation for their injuries by filing a workers’ compensation claim. This method is easier to recover compensation since you do not need to prove your employer’s fault. However, the compensation you recover may not be as much as other methods.

  • Filing a personal injury claim. In order to recover compensation through a personal injury lawsuit, you must prove the defendant had a duty to provide for your safety, they failed to do so, and their action caused your injury. In many instances, the subcontractor has some liability with regard to a worker’s injuries.

  • Filing a product liability claim. Manufacturers have a responsibility to distribute safe products to the market. If you have been injured on your job site because a defective piece of equipment malfunctioned, you may be able to recover compensation from the product’s manufacturer through a product liability claim.
