When is the Safest Time to Drive?

Wagner Reese

a highway sign near IndianapolisWe know that driving is a ubiquitous part of our lives, and that’s not changing. However, auto accidents remain one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. Because of this, we recommend switching up your routine and making safer choices when it comes to driving.

With the help of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), we are able to determine the safest times to drive.

Most Dangerous Times of the Year to Drive

Many drivers might assume that the most dangerous time of the year to drive is in the winter—with icy roads and reduced visibility, it makes sense! But, the most dangerous time to drive is in the summer, particularly during the holidays.

Some of the most fatal accidents occur around Memorial Day, Labor Day, and the Fourth of July because so many people hit the roads. These crashes only increase as day turns into night as more people are likely to drink and drive.

The Safest Times to Drive

According to the data, weekdays are much safer times to drive, with Tuesday being the safest. On the other hand, Fridays and Saturdays can be the most dangerous times to drive with the most amount of accidents.

Generally, the deadliest times to drive are between midnight and 4 AM because there tends to be an increase in impaired drivers.

While mornings and afternoons are safer, there are some exceptions. Rush hour traffic, which typically runs from 8 AM to 10 AM in the morning, and then again from 4 PM to 7 PM in the evening, plays a part in safety too. With the influx of cars at these peak times, the roads become more dangerous. If you can, adjust your routine so that you’re avoiding these hours. Even a 30-minute change can make a difference.
