Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play Sleeper Recalled After Infant Deaths
In early April 2019, Fisher-Price announced the voluntary recall of 4.7 million Rock ‘n Play sleeper products amid fears that the product can cause infant death. Only days before the toymaker recalled the sleeper, the American Academy of Pediatrics asked Mattel — the parent company of Fisher-Price — to pull the product from shelves after it labeled the sleeper “deadly.” The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recommended that any parent who owns a Rock ‘n Play sleeper immediately discontinue use of the product and contact Fisher-Price or Mattel to discuss getting a refund.
Why is the Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play Sleeper Recalled?
According to the CPSC, at least 10 infant deaths since 2015 have been linked to the Rock ‘n Play sleeper. All children were aged three months or older, and nearly all had rolled onto their side or stomach and suffocated. Notably, Consumer Reports claims to have conducted its own investigation into infant deaths and sleeper use, not focusing solely on Rock ‘n Play sleepers made by Fisher-Price. According to their findings, 32 infant deaths from 2011 and 2018 may be assocated with sleeper use. Some of the infants in this report were aged younger than three months. It is not known at this time if the CPSC intends to recall other similarly designed rocker-sleepers.
