Multiple-Vehicle Crash Near Construction Zone Leaves Several Injured

Wagner Reese

On Tuesday, August 13, a semi-truck drove into stopped traffic near a construction zone, leaving several drivers injured in a multi-vehicle crash. The accident occurred in Jasper County around 11:00 p.m. near the 228-mile marker on I-65, and resulted in complete closure of the northbound and southbound lanes for about six hours. According to reports by the Indiana State Police, at least six vehicles were involved in the crash, including the semi-truck and double trailer owned by UPS, which caused the initial ordeal. Thankfully, nobody was killed, but several drivers were transported to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries.

The accident initially occurred when a UPS semi-truck driver, 61-year-old Richard Turner, overlooked the lane closures and marked construction zone along I-65. Because of these lane closures, traffic was stopped up ahead of Turner. Another driver, Geoffrey Minger, saw Turner’s vehicle approaching quickly from behind, so he attempted to move out of the way to avoid a rear-end collision. Although Minger’s vehicle was in the other lane, Turner still struck his vehicle, though the damage wasn’t as great as it could have been.

Turner’s semi then went on to strike another vehicle, causing several rear-end collisions. After causing a pile-up, the semi drove into the median and rolled across the southbound lanes before finally coming to a stop. Several people were injured and were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
