Popular Children's Makeup Kit Contains Dangerous Amounts of Asbestos
New Reports Claim Asbestos Found in Popular Kid’s Makeup and Beauty Cosmetics
Your children may be dressing up with contaminated makeup kits from Claire’s, says Sean Fitzgerald of the Scientific Analytical Institute in a December 2017 report by Newsweek. A Rhode Island mother claims to have first discovered the issue with her 6-year-old daughter’s glitter makeup kit purchased at Claire’s, a popular shop where children’s accessories are sold. The mother was suspicious of the makeup kit and requested the law firm she works for send the product to the independent lab to be tested.
Scientific Analytical Institute testers say results were alarming and revealed tremolite asbestos, a toxic, cancer-causing material. Exposure to asbestos has been linked to mesothelioma, which is 100 percent fatal. After initial tests of the makeup product raised concerned that other kids might be exposed or items sold in other states may also be contaminated, the lab conducted 24 additional tests on 17 new Claire’s items and again the results were not good. The lab has allegedly found tremolite asbestos in every single product tested.
Since, Claire’s has issued this statement. “The initial results of testing by an independent certified laboratory show that the cosmetics tested to date are asbestos free. Out of an abundance of caution, additional testing is underway. We have also confirmed that the talcum ingredient supply is from a certified asbestos free European vendor. We will continue to honor returns for any customers remaining uncomfortable.”
Claire’s has also pulled these products: Ultimate Mega Make Up Set, Metallic Hot Pink Glitter 48 Piece Makeup Set, Pink Glitter Cellphone Makeup Compact, Bedazzled Rainbow Heart Makeup Set, Rainbow Bedazzled Star Make Up Set, Rainbow Glitter Heart Shaped Makeup Set, Mint Glitter Make Up Set, Rainbow Bedazzled Rectangle Make Up Set and Pink Glitter Palette with Eyeshadow & Lip Gloss.
Wagner Reese partners with independent labs to test product liability concerns, but the firm is not involved with testing Claire’s products at this time. However, we will continue to stay updated on this story so Hoosier children can be protected from the harmful effects of chemicals.
