Crossover Accidents Continue in Rural Areas
Crossover accidents like the collision on Old U.S. 421 remain an issue of major concern in rural areas. We’ve reported on dozens of these deadly crashes and worked with many clients who were injured or who lost loved ones in fatal crossover accidents. Part of the reason we see so many crossover accidents in Indiana is because of the large number of rural areas home to two-lane two-way state and county roads. On these types of roadways, a car only needs to drift a few feet in order to find itself right in the pathway of an oncoming vehicle. With driving speeds typically around 55 miles per hour, a small drift can happen in less than a second. If a driver simply reaches down to turn up the radio or glances into the back seat to check on a child, the result can be deadly.
It’s critical to be vigilant on rural Indiana roadways, and to be aware when there are other vehicles on the roadway. When traffic is infrequent, a driver can be lulled into a false sense of safety, feeling as if it is no big deal to remove their eyes from the road “for just a second.” Drivers must maintain their attentiveness to the road and to other vehicles around them in order to prevent unintentional drifting and also as a defensive driving activity. Doing so can help reduce your odds of being involved in a fatal crossover accident.
