Man Dies After Being Held in Henry County Jail

Jason Reese

There are many questions about the death of a man who was being held at Henry County Jail. Brian Gosser of New Castle, 32 years old, was arrested for drunk driving on February 17 after a crash that caused minor injuries to an 11-year-old child in his vehicle. On Friday, March 4, he was pronounced dead at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. This week, Marion County Coroner officials, said his injuries were due to “multiple blunt force trauma injuries” and ruled the death a homicide.

Though the story is still evolving, a general timeline has emerged based on the investigation of the Henry County Prosecutor and the county’s investigations team. Gosser was arrested on February 17, and on March 1, emergency personnel were called to the jail about an issue that involved Gosser. On Thursday, March 3, he was transferred to Henry County Hospital and then to St. Vincent Hospital, where he died on Friday, March 4. Gosser, the son of a former Rush County Sheriff, was scheduled for a hearing on Monday, as he had requested a reduction of his bond or to be released on home detention. Henry County Prosecutor, Joe Bergacs, said Gosser had been involved in a fight at the jail sometime before Thursday, when he was transferred from the jail to the hospital.

Henry County Jail is no stranger to the deaths of prisoners. They have been sued a number of times in the past ten years for inmate deaths related to beatings and indifference to inmate medical needs. While jails and prisons are intended to keep the general population safe by keeping criminals off the streets, they are also responsible for ensuring the individuals entrusted to their facilities are provided the appropriate care and protection.
