Nature Made Vitamins Recalled for Potential Contamination

Jason Reese

A northern California vitamin company is recalling several products as a result of possible contamination. Pharmavite LLC, based in Northridge, has recalled several of its Nature Made vitamin products thus far. At the moment, the vitamin recall is precautionary and due to possible contamination with salmonella and staphylococcus aureus. According to Pharmavite, they are not aware of any confirmed illnesses at this point, but they believe proper testing for salmonella and staph was not properly completed for the recalled products.

There have been additional vitamins recalled due to a breakdown in the processing of vitamins. Due to this breakdown, there is the possibility of unwanted organisms, such as yeast, to be present in the affected vitamins

The products recalled for possible salmonella and/or staph contamination are:

  • Nature Made Adult Gummies Multi
    • Lot numbers 1196066, 1196071, 1205052
  • Nature Made Adult Gummies Multi + Omega-3
    • Lot numbers 1173600
  • Nature Made Adult Gummies Multi for Her plus Omega-3s
    • Lot numbers 1196048, 1196050
  • Nature Made Super B Complex w/C & Folic Acid tablets
    • Lot numbers 1173779, 1170987, 1204735, 1173146, 1204001

Products recalled due to process breakdown, possibly allowing unwanted organisms into the product are:

  • Nature Made Adult Gummies Hair, Skin, Nails
    • Lot numbers 1198437 and 1198438
  • Nature Made Vitamin D 1000 IU tablets
    • Lot numbers 1147550, 1174782, 1176755, 1140172, 1175637, 1176756, 1147978, 1147557

Lot numbers are located near the expiration date on the back panels of the potentially affected products. Anyone who has recently purchased or is currently using any of the recalled products is urged to stop using them immediately. Recalled products can be returned to stores for full refunds.

Signs of Illnesses Related to Product Contamination

Uncomplicated cases of salmonella or staphylococcus aureus infection contracted via ingestion are usually uncomfortable but not deadly. Most people recover on their own within a few days.

Symptoms of salmonella poisoning include abdominal cramping, diarrhea, and fever. They can last up to a week and can cause serious problems in immunocompromised individuals or if severe diarrhea causes dehydration. Risk of serious illness is increased for the very young and the elderly.

Staphylococcus aureus presents like typical food poisoning, with the predominant symptoms being nausea, cramping, and vomiting. As with salmonella, the symptoms may be more serious for those whose immune systems may not be 100%, either due to age or illness/health conditions.
