Westfield Accident Prompts Investigations and Safety Checks
Our thoughts are still with the families and students at Westfield High School after the shocking stage collapse that sent 16 students to the hospital with a range of injuries.
The students were in the midst of a performance when the stage collapsed, and videos from the event showed the drastic change of mood. Investigations were trepidatious at first, because jurisdiction was an issue. OSHA wanted to investigate the event, but because no teachers or workers were involved in the event, they did not have the ability for the first week.
IOSHA reversed that decision on Monday, and they have been investigating the event since. A formal safety investigation is underway, and we hope they will be able to determine the cause of the stage collapse, and prevent future injuries with the information they uncover.
We will keep you updated as we hear more, but we are excited to see some good coming out of this accident. Because of the tragedy, other schools and state organizations are doing double-checks of their stages and equipment, hoping to prevent accidents like this one from occurring in the future.
