Johnson County Inmate Dies Hours After Arrest
A 19-year-old Johnson County resident was arrested early Monday morning on drug charges. Police say the inmate was seen by a jail nurse after his detention on Monday morning, and that she requested he be taken to the hospital around noon. Surveillance videos allegedly show him walking into the transport van on his own. However, when they reached the hospital, the man was unconscious. The ER team tried to revive him, but he remained unresponsive and was pronounced dead just a few minutes after arriving at Johnson Memorial Hospital.
The man has been identified as Kyler Myers, but the cause of death is still unknown. The Johnson County coroner is scheduled to do an autopsy on today. We will follow the news closely and keep you updated when we hear more about the resulting investigation, and what exactly happened at the jail and during Myers’ transport. For now, there are numerous questions to be answered. Was Myers experiencing withdrawal from drugs or alcohol? When did he first request medical assistance? Was he properly screened upon admission to the jail?
