Bike to Work Day Success!
Indy’s #BikeToWorkDay last Friday was a huge hit! We were so thankful to see so many of you out and about at the Carmel Clay Parks Event, and we hope you all enjoy your reflective wristbands as we work toward safer biking practices around our great city!
In honor of the event and this gorgeous spring weather, it never hurts to take a minute and review some bike safety tips:
- Wear your new reflective safety bands – If you didn’t get a band, you can still protect yourself with brightly colored clothing, and reflectors on your bike.
- Stay on your side of the road – There seem to be conflicting opinions on this, but the law is that bicycles occupy the roads just like a vehicle would, same side, same lanes, unless there is a separate and designated bike lane.
- Don’t ride while carrying additional items – If it prevents you from having both hands on your handlebars, it’s actually illegal to carry.
- Keep your eyes peeled – As the smaller “object” on the road, you are harder for cars to see. Make sure they see you! If you can, try to make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you.
Take a minute to review our Bike Safety Infographic and figure out some steps you can take to better protect yourself on your next bike ride:
If you spot potential hazards while you’re out on your bike rides, you can take steps to get them fixed by reporting them to the Indiana Department of Transportation. You can report concerns here, and potholes here.
Watch for us to be out several more times this Spring and Summer handing out reflective wrist bands!
