Bus Company Involved in Multiple Accidents
Another bus accident occurred on I-65 last week when a 55 passenger bus operated by Excursions Trailways of Fort Wayne, IN drove off the east side of the road and into the median, and then back into the southbound lanes, then off the west side of the road. After the bus was off the road, it spun clockwise and then flipped over. The cause of the accident is still unknown, and we will keep you updated when police reports release more information on the crash. Investigators are currently collecting data from recording devices on board the bus, in an attempt to determine the cause of the accident.
However, we do know that this is not the first bus accident for Excursions Trailways, as they were involved in another fatal accident back in October of 2013.
Back in 2013, one of the company’s buses was travelling from Chicago to Fort Wayne when they collided with a 1996 Toyota Tercel that was driving next to them in the eastbound lane. The driver of the Tercel reportedly lost control of the car, and despite efforts to move the bus, the driver was unable to avoid a collision. The passenger of the Tercel was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of the accident.
Excursions Trailways has undergone several inspections over the past two years, 15 to be exact. Ten of the inspections have been driver inspections, and five were federal inspections. In what falls below the national standard for bus companies, only one of the buses was pulled out of rotation and deemed unsafe. Only having one bus pulled puts this company a full 20% below the national average for buses pulled out of service.
