Medical Misdiagnosis: An Epidemic as Life Threatening as Breast Cancer
Are you one of the 1 in 20 patients who received a misdiagnosis from your doctor? If so, you may not be aware that as many as 50% of those who receive a bad medical diagnosis could be in danger of losing their life. The number of misdiagnosis errors in intensive care units actually equals the number of breast cancer deaths annually.
We’ve put together this infographic for you to share with your loved ones to continue shedding some light on this epidemic. We want to encourage all of our readers to always get a second opinion when it comes to medical decisions, and to never agree to take medication or submit to testing from your doctor that you don’t believe is medically necessary.
Remember that just because your doctor may be an expert, you need to make good decisions for yourself, for your health, and for your family- be your own advocate. Do your own independent research, get second opinions, and ask your doctor for explanations on everything.
Most importantly, make sure you are giving your doctor the whole picture. Some misdiagnosis incidents occur because patients withhold information they believe to be irrelevant, or perhaps embarrassing. Remember that your doctor is bound to confidentiality with you, and that it is important for them to have a full picture of your health and symptoms.
