Doctors Over-Prescribing Medical Tests

Steve Wagner

Doctors across the country are struggling with a balance of over-prescribing tests and a significant fear of malpractice lawsuits. For many, the risk of putting patients through the ringer, and requiring them to undergo numerous tests is a smaller risk than that of their insurance increasing or dropping them as a result of a potential lawsuit.

The over-prescription of routine testing can lead to additional problems for many patients. For example, patients who are over-exposed to radiation as a result of repeated MRI’s, X-rays, mammograms, CT scans, or other types of imaging can have severe complications, and even suffer from more extreme problems than they originally had as a result of the testing. The over-prescription of antibiotics can also damage the health of patients, causing increased allergies and autoimmune complications.

In a recent study, 72% of doctors admitted to prescribing completely unnecessary tests or procedures at least once per week out of the fear of a lawsuit. On the other side of the fence, we can’t count the number of cases we see each year that occur as a result of doctors and medical staff overlooking or missing problems because of negligence.
