Prescription Drug Abuse Epidemic
Prescription drug abuse is an ever-increasing phenomenon in the U.S., one that plagues average households, one that injures neighbors, friends, and family members, and one that takes the lives of people we love dearly.
In 1999, prescription drug abuse took the lives of 3.2 out of every 100,000 people. Today, those rates have more than doubled, tripled, and even quadrupled in some areas of the United States. Indiana is one of the four states in our country with quadrupled rates, which means more than 12 people per every 100,000 are dying as a result of prescription drug overdose in our state.
Even more terrifying than these stats is the fact that we are uncovering more and more doctors who are contributing to the epidemic. The latest string of reports comes from Dr. Hedrick and the Centers for Pain Relief. In his efforts to make greater profits off of his medical clinics, Dr. Hedrick, the charges brought against Hedrick indicate activities like Medicaid fraud, money laundering, and a host of ill-treatment towards his patients, including over-prescribing medications and providing patients with mixes of prescriptions that are dangerous, and in many cases, deadly.
So far, we know of eight patients who were under Dr. Hedrick’s care that have passed away as an alleged result of prescription drug overdose.
Our hearts go out to the families of those who were lost, and we hope they are able to find some peace through the trial of Dr. Hedrick. If you need assistance or have questions about an injury or death that occurred as the result of prescription drugs, including those given out by Dr. Hedrick, you can call the drug injury and medical malpractice attorneys of Wagner Reese at (888) 204-8440.
