Dr. Hedrick's Patients Turn to Heroin
If you still don’t believe that prescription drug addiction is dangerous, or even real, we hope you caught this heartbreaking follow-up to the arrest of Dr. Hedrick. Fox 59 tracked down some of his former patients, and found that many of them are now using heroin as a replacement for the opioid pain medications they can no longer get prescriptions for.
Last week we showed you the connections between Dr. Hedrick’s alleged reckless prescribing habits, and the deaths of 8 former patients. It is baffling how the healthcare system allows for a few bad apples to take advantage of the system for financial gain and potential disregard for patients health and well-being through fraudulent claims filings for government programs. Consequently, tax payers are on the hook for these doctors actions.
The most frightening part, is the research exists to show that these opioid medications are no longer working in the ways that most doctors are prescribing them. Not only is it possible for patients to basically become immune to these drugs after a while, but they can also cause those with chronic pain to suffer worse pain, a disorder called Opioid-Induced Hyperalgesia.
If a doctor is potentially over-prescribing medications or painkillers for chronic pain, it never hurts to get a second opinion from another doctor. Serious painkillers and opioids need to be monitored very closely, because the risk for addiction is just too high. Seeing prescription drug addicted patients turn to street drugs is something no one wants to see in this country, but it’s a reality that is becoming more and more prevalent.
