Do Surgeons Cause More Accidents?

Steve Wagner

In a recent analysis commissioned by British financial group Moneysupermarket.com, it was discovered that surgeons are among the most likely in Great Britain to file an “at fault” motor vehicle accident claim with their insurance providers.

Speculations have been made that they are more “dangerous” on the road because of high stress and very limited amounts of spare time, which also may lead them to rush in many situations. The rate of claims was 361 per 1000 over a five-year period in which the analysis was performed.

Other professions that were high on the list included many other medical workers, including psychologists and nurses. Probation officers also made the list, likely attributed to the large number of hours they spend on the road.

Are you in a profession that puts you at higher risk for a motor vehicle accident? If you are frequently on the road, or work in a job that involves a high amount of stress, here are a few tips to help keep you safe on the road:

  • Get plenty of rest: We know that may be difficult, especially for those on swing shifts, or for those who work a lot of “on call” shifts, but the NHTSA reports that tired driving is often as dangerous as drunk driving.
  • Avoid distractions: Put your cell phone down, do your makeup at home, and save switching the radio stations for when you’re stopped. Distractions are rapidly growing as a reason for accidents, and if you can avoid distractions and keep your eyes on the road, you have a much greater chance of staying safe.
  • Don’t rush: This starts with planning. You will always be rushed on the road if you are rushed getting ready. If you have to be somewhere at a certain time, leave yourself extra time to get ready and arrive at your destination. Speeding and rushed moves on the road are a surefire way to cause an accident.
