A Third Inmate Dies At Johnson County Jail
The Indianapolis Star reports that Indiana State Police are investigating after an inmate died over Labor Day weekend at the Johnson County Jail. This is the third inmate death at the Indiana jail so far in 2014. The other two deaths were ruled as suicides while an autopsy is scheduled for further information about this most recent case involved 59-year-old Thomas A. Wyss of Whiteland, Indiana.
Wyss was arrested on a probation warrant and collapsed in his cell the next day. His cellmate called for help, and paramedics tried to resuscitate Wyss. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Johnson County Sheriff Doug Cox had asked for state police assistance after the two earlier deaths this year. Because they were in the middle of investigation, there had not yet been any recommended changes to policies or procedures for the jail. The Wyss death may become part of that investigation pending his autopsy results.
We would like to express our condolences to the family of Mr. Wyss at this tragic time and will update this story as the investigation progresses.
