Preventable Medical Errors In Indiana
We have talked recently about the top medical errors being made across the country, but our friends over at the Indy Star have taken a deeper look at the patient injuries resulting from medical accidents and errors that are plaguing our state. Here’s what they found:
In 2013, there were 111 medical errors that took place at 293 different facilities. Since the inception of reporting practices, 2013 had the highest numbers for medical errors. Like other years, bed sores still topped the list as the most frequent preventable medical error or injury suffered by patients. There were 45 cases of advanced bed sores in the state of Indiana last year alone. Bed sores are something that is avoidable with the proper care and attention paid to a patient, and they typically only occur when neglect is a factor.
The next most common types of preventable hospital incurred injuries are caused by foreign objects being left inside of a patient during surgery, and even surgeries that are performed on the wrong body parts altogether. There were 27 reported cases of objects being left inside of a patient during a surgical operation in 2013, and 18 reports of incorrect surgeries performed in the same year.
