Indiana Medicaid to Receive Settlement from Extendicare Health Services, Inc.
Indiana’s State Medicaid program is set to receive a settlement payment of over $708,000 from the Extendicare Health Services Inc. EHS is settling the case against them regarding allegations that they were wrongly billing for services that were not being provided at their facility. An investigation by eight different states and the federal government showed that the companies not only wrongfully billed Medicare and Medicaid, but they were providing substandard services.
The settlement involves cases that occurred between 2007 and 2013, and includes all Extendicare facilities in Ontario, Canada, the headquarters in Milwaukee, WI, and facilities in over 11 states, including Indiana. Extendicare has not admitted fault in this case, but have agreed to settle and sign an agreement to better protect their residents and provide them with the care they deserve, in addition to the reimbursement of the money they over-billed.
If you suspect your loved one has been neglected or injured in a nursing home or assisted living facility, don’t hesitate to report it and ask for help. The Indiana Attorney General’s website offers several tips to help you determine the safety of your loved ones in these facilities:
- Look for signs of physical abuse, and report any evidence. Make note of if you think the injury went unreported for a time. Look for burns, bruises, bedsores, and even non-reactions or minimal reactions to pain.
- Watch out for missing medication, and make sure your loved ones are receiving their proper doses.
- Pay attention to the emotional response of your loved ones. Do they seem withdrawn or fearful? What kind of language do you hear caretakers using with those in the facility?
- Watch for signs of neglect: are your loved ones dirty? Do they have on old clothes? Do they look malnourished? Are they making unusual requests for food?
You can read the full list on the Attorney General’s site, but make sure you keep an eye on your loved ones. Check in on them frequently, note the number of staff members, ask to see the facility’s Star Rating, and get a feel for how residents other than your loved ones are doing.
