Elder Abuse Increasing by More Than 300%
The problem of elder abuse in our nursing homes and assisted living facilities seems to be getting worse instead of better. According to a recent investigation by RTV6, the number of calls to Adult Protective Services in the last 10 years has more than tripled, growing from 11,122 to 39,874.
The types of elder abuse reported varies dramatically, some suffering physical and sexual abuse, others suffering from verbal and emotional abuse, some suffering neglect, and other suffering the very common form of financial abuse (usually through exploitation of insurance and Medicare).
Indiana only has 41 full-time investigators to handle the thousands and thousands of calls Adult Protective Services receives each year, but the Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council is working to change that and increase the number of investigators for elder abuse in the state of Indiana.
