Two-Thirds of Children Killed Are Passengers of A Drunk Driver
The greatest tragedy of drunk driving is that it has killed 2,344 children between 2001 and 2010. This statistic was recently released in a study printed in the journal, Pediatrics. The study was conducted by researchers who examined data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on children, aged 15 or younger, who were killed as a result of drunk driving.
The study determined that over two-thirds of the children killed, 1,515 to be exact, were actually passengers in the car of the drunk driver who caused the accident. We are shocked by these statistics, as the number should be zero, while drunk driving is dangerous and illegal, children should absolutely never be inside the vehicle of a drunk driver. These statistics cast light on a much larger need for penalties for those who would put children in such danger.
M.A.D.D. is currently raising awareness for this issue, attempting to increase penalties for those who would abuse children in this way, putting them at risk for such extreme injuries and death.
