Spring Break Alternatives
You may be wondering if there are any alternative options for you or your child to participate in over the spring break holiday. In fact, there are quite a few options for you to choose from, many of which are much safer and helpful than drinking by the poolside in Cancun.
Here are a few great options for you to explore for this year’s spring break vacation:
- Projects Abroad: If you are interested in traveling overseas, Projects Abroad is a fabulous organization that plans volunteer trips. You can choose from many destinations, including Morocco, Jamaica, Costa Rica, Ghana, and Mexico, all with the purpose of changing lives and helping others. Whether you are interested in assisting with a medical clinic or building houses, there is something for everyone on a Projects Abroad trip.
- United Way: Every year, the United Way partners with thousands of teenagers and young adults to change lives and make a difference right here in the states. It’s not too late to sign up for one of their volunteer weeks for this year’s Break a Difference Program!
- Many colleges are now offering alternative options to give teens and young adults a way to give back over their breaks. Check with the administration office on your campus to see if your college has any options for you to join!
- Consider taking a trip to a location not so filled with drugs, alcohol and risk. Many non-beach locations are running specials during this time of year. Consider traveling to a ski-lodge or a mountain destination instead of a typical spring break spot. Not only are you likely to stay safer and out of trouble, you will also save a good chunk of money this way.
With all the risks that accompany typical spring break trips, it is just not worth it. Consider helping someone else this spring break by joining a volunteer group, or enjoy a vacation with close friends or family to a location that you might not otherwise visit. Most importantly, stay safe, stay alert, stay sober. Know the risks and protect yourself from the very real dangers that accompany spring break vacations!
