New Prescription Drug Causes Uproar
Health care, consumer and addiction treatment groups are pleading with the FDA to recall a drug that has just been released. This drug, known as Zohydro is a hydrocodone based pain killer that experts say will be another in the long line of addictive substances currently on the market.
In a time when prescription drug addiction is causing more deaths than illegal substance deaths, the release of stronger opioid analgesics is the last thing the FDA needs to be approving. Zohydro is said to be as much as five times stronger than other opioids currently on the market, and its manufacturer is saying this could be a groundbreaking drug for people who are truly suffering from intense, chronic pain, critics still believe the risks outweigh the benefits.
According to the CDC, 16,651 people were killed in relation to opioid deaths in 2010, which is four times higher than the deaths that occurred just over a decade earlier, when 4,030 lives were lost in 1999.
We do not want to see more drugs like this released into the market, because we have seen the impact potent opioids like this one have on individuals and families when lives are lost. We hope the FDA will heed the warnings and will recall their approval of Zohydro.
