Farming Accident in Putnam County

Steve Wagner

Putnam County, IN authorities are investigating a farming accident that occurred on a farm just southeast of Greencastle in the 2600 block of East County Road 350 South. The accident involved Riley Sutherlin, a 17-year-old who was operating a backhoe on the farm owned by his family.

Sutherlin was moving some dirt with the backhoe when the machine rolled onto its side. Sutherlin was thrown out of the cab and crushed by the backhoe. EMT’s tried to revive Sutherlin, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Our hearts go out to the family of Riley Sutherlin, and we wish them peace and comfort during this difficult time. We hope this accident can help others be more aware of the dangers of large equipment, and the necessity for safety and accountability with these machines. If you are working with large equipment, make sure to have people around you to help assess risks, and watch out for potential dangers.
