Medicare Set to Penalize U.S. Hospitals with High Infection and Injury Rates
750 hospitals are about to be fined for having the highest rates of infection and patient injuries in the country. The sanctions against these hospitals are totalling over $330 million and will be collected over the next year.
According to government estimates, 1 in every 8 patients suffered from an avoidable injury or complication during a hospital stay, and at the hospitals with the highest rates, new bacteria are becoming antibiotic resistant even faster than old infections can be treated and cured.
The fines against the hospitals are coming in the form of Medicare penalties. Starting in October, 1/4th of the hospitals in the United States (the ones with the worst infection and injury rates) will lose as much as 1% of every Medicare payment they receive for the entire year.
