5-Year-Old Dies in Daycare Accident
Another innocent life has been lost after a negligence incident at a daycare in Michigan City, Indiana last week. Five-year-old Amareon Williams reportedly choked to death on a jump rope that was hanging from a playground outside the daycare. Although the event is still under investigation, authorities discovered this daycare had received six serious citations just months before this incident, including violations for missing background check on employees, as well as a citation for unreported abuse.
Instead of closing the daycare facility when these citations were issued, the state just put them on probation, allowing them to continue operation. If they had been properly shut down, this accident would have never happened.
Our hearts go out to Anita Williams, the mother of this little boy, as well as the rest of his family and loved ones. We strongly encourage all parents to take this tragic story as a reminder to do your own investigations on daycare centers. Even if you know the owners, you can never be too sure about what goes on behind closed doors. Ask to see their licenses. Call the state and get information on any active citations on the center. Follow up on a regular basis and talk to other parents of children at the facility. Get all the information you can do what you can to protect your children from accidents like this one.
