Being Aware Around Semi Trucks: Blind Spots and Avoiding Accidents
We have all been in close calls near semi trucks, whether we were negligently following too closely, or they changed lanes quickly and didn’t see us in their path. Today, we would like to offer a few pointers to help drivers learn how to better navigate the road spaces around semi to prevent Indiana truck accidents.
- Know where the blind spots are located. If you are directly behind the truck (too close to see the truck’s side mirrors), you are in one of the blind spots. If you are too close to the truck, this blind spot can span for several lanes to either side. There is also a blind spot directly in front of the truck that spans around to the passenger’s side door.
- Do not follow too closely. It doesn’t matter if you are directly behind the semi or in a lane on either side of it; following too closely can be dangerous in a number of situations. If the semi driver cannot see you, they may stop too quickly, not realizing you are behind/beside him. They may also change lanes rapidly, if they believe they are the only ones on that stretch of road.
- Drive with plenty of room in front of the semi. This doesn’t give you a license to speed, by any means, but if you are directly in front of a semi, make sure you allow them adequate room to maneuver. Semi trucks involuntarily (because of their weight) gain and lose speed when traveling up and down hills. If you are too close in front of them when heading down a hill, they may not be able to slow down quickly enough to keep from rear-ending you. Also make sure the truck is far enough behind you before you cross lanes in front of them.
If you are involved in an accident with a semi truck, seek medical attention immediately. Even if you do not believe you are injured, have a police and a medical report filed in case later injuries are discovered.
