It's New Year's Eve - Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over
There’s no faster way to dampen a holiday spirit than by hearing of all the people who are injured and killed each year by drunk drivers. In December 2012, 830 people were killed as a result of drunk driving crashes. In fact, drunk driving accidents are so frequent during the holidays, that one person is killed every 54 minutes as a result.
This year, the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are working hard to fight against drunk drivers, to make it more difficult for them to get behind the wheel of a car, and to stop them before they injure anyone.
Their message: “Drive sober or get pulled over”.
In addition to increased patrols during the holidays, the USDOT is working on new technology for state Ignition Interlock Programs. These new devices will make it impossible for drivers with a history of drunk driving to start and operate their vehicles while intoxicated. USDOT is hoping all states will adopt this technology within the next few years.
If you or your loved one have been affected by a drunk driver in the past, you know the importance of driving sober and staying alert on the road (don’t drive tired or distracted, either!). This New Year’s Eve, take the online pledge not to drive under the influence at Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving and share it with the ones you love.
