Officer Arrested for OWI after Accident
An off-duty Edgewood police officer has been arrested on an OWI after killing one and injuring others while he was driving under the influence of hydrocodone. The officer, James Foutch, was driving a GMC Yukon when he crashed into the rear end of a Buick Century. Foutch was not injured, and his passenger was taken to the hospital with complaints of minor pains.
The driver of the Buick was Rebecca Marie Sperry, who was nine months pregnant. She was transported by Stat Flight Medical Helicopter to St. Vincent and treated for severe injuries. Later that day she gave birth via C-section to a baby girl. Her husband, the passenger in the Buick, was pronounced dead at the scene of the OWI accident.
We are heartbroken to hear of this family that was torn apart by the negligence and carelessness of a police officer, who knows and understands not only is operating a vehicle while under the influence is illegal, it is also dangerous and deadly. The accident is still under investigation, and we hope to bring you more details as they come.
For now, our deepest sympathies go out to Rebecca Sperry and her new daughter. We wish them healing and strength after this traumatic event, but know that their lives will never be the same without the husband and father who was taken from them.
