Industrial Crane Accident Kills 25-Year-Old Worker

Steve Wagner

This morning, the Indianapolis Star reports that a worker was fatally crushed by a crane when moving a 5,000 pound generator from a truck. The crane accident happened around 11 am at the B-Mac Wireless Company at 8905 Rawles Avenue on the far east side of Indianapolis. The company installs cell phone towers.

The Indianapolis Fire Department reports that the 25-year-old victim had a commercial driver’s license and believed the load was light enough to move without using outrigging equipment on the crane. He was operating the crane using controls outside the cab when the crane tipped over from the weight of the generator and crushed him. Officials pronounced him dead on the scene. The identify of the worker has not yet been released pending family notification.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a total of 4,383 fatal work injuries in the US in 2012. Of these, 509 workers were fatally injured after being struck by objects or equipment. Industrial crane and construction site accidents continue to be one of the largest contributing sources of fatal work accidents.

We wish the family of this young man our condolences and offer our assistance at this time of need.
