2012 Medical Errors Report for Indiana
Bed sores are a source of serious injury for hundreds of patients each year. Almost exclusively caused by hospital negligence, these pressure sores can quickly turn from a painful nuisance to death.
In Indiana, there are an average of 30 serious cases of bed sores each year, all of which are preventable with a little extra time and caution. Bed sores are the highest occurrence of any type of medical error in the state. According to the 2012 Medical Errors Report by the Indiana State Department of Health, other medical errors included 19 cases of foreign objects being left inside a patient after surgery, 15 surgeries performed on the wrong body part, and 14 falls that resulted in a serious injury or death.
A large part of the report also covered the 7 instances of death or serious injury that were among the 68 fungal meningitis cases caused by contaminated drug administration. The drugs were steroids used as injections for back pain, and the outbreak occurred in seven cities in Indiana.
For the past two years, the report has listed 100 adverse events in the state of Indiana, all of which should be avoided with proper care, awareness and training. Unfortunately, medical negligence is a huge problem among our hospitals and clinics, and the only way to change that is to fight back.
