The State of Nursing Home Neglect in Indiana
The first ever nationwide nursing home report card was recently published by “Families for Better Care,” a Florida-based nursing home resident advocacy group. The report paints a grim picture of nursing homes in Indiana. Our state ranks at the bottom, along with Texas and Louisiana, for the quality of care in nursing homes, whereas Alaska, Rhode Island and New Hampshire take top honors. According to the report, Indiana is the worst-performing state among Great Lakes Region’s six states.
The report considers eight federal quality measures, including percentage of facilities with severe deficiencies and the number of hours frontline caregivers averaged per resident per day. Nursing homes in Indiana were shockingly inadequate, scoring a “D” in most of the parameters. One in four Indiana nursing homes have been cited for severe care deficiencies as well as widespread abuse, neglect and mistreatment of residents.
Overall, states whose nursing homes have higher staffing levels rank far better than states with lower staffing levels in nursing homes. With direct care staffing graded at the “D” level and ranking 40th among all states, Indiana care centers suffer greatly in terms of staffing. The direct care staffing hours reflects an even more dismal picture for Indiana, with a rock-bottom grading of “F” and a rank of 48 among all states.
