Semi Truck Crash Victim's Leg Amputated on the Scene

Steve Wagner

The driver of a semi truck suffered major injuries after his vehicle crashed into a sound barrier on I-69 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The mangled wreckage kept him trapped inside for several hours as rescue workers could not extricate him. The southbound semi appeared to go out of control before ramming into the wall.

Crippling accident
The fire force personnel was unable to extricate the driver even after two and a half hours. His body was clamped inside the wreckage from the waist down. With time running out, Emergency Medical Services with the Three Rivers Ambulance Authority had to make a critical decision. The only way to save the life of 49-year-old man was to amputate his trapped leg and get him to the hospital immediately.

Finally, after much consultation, the medics decided to go ahead and amputate the driver’s leg to try and save his life. A trauma physician from Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne communicated to the medics through their online medical control to supervise the surgery.

Expert legal advice necessary
Injuries resulting in traumatic amputation due to worksite accidents are covered by workers compensation insurance. If this trucking accident occurred while the driver was on duty, a worker’s compensation attorney could clarify whether it would come under the provisions of a workplace accident covered by Indiana workman’s compensation.

A public information officer for the Fort Wayne Police Department, stated that witness reports did not clarify the cause of the accident, but since it was established that the driver was not under the influence of alcohol, his claim for worker’s compensation could be valid.

Medical and legal aid for recovery
The emergency amputation was the first time such an incident was recorded in the history of Fort Wayne. The next day the driver was recovering in hospital, but his condition was still critical. Medical expenses are likely to be high regarding his care and rehabilitation.

All employers are obliged to ensure their workers are covered by worker’s compensation insurance in case of injury while on duty. Injured persons need a reliable Indiana personal injury law firm who can explain work comp law and help them file their claims for compensation. A good worker’s comp law firm will offer free consultation and not charge fees till compensation is received. They will ensure that maximum compensation is obtained.
