Indiana School Buses Failing Safety Inspections
Indiana is no stranger to school bus accidents. Over the last year, there have been several accidents which have injured and killed children across the state. Some injuries sustained have been minor, but others have been debilitating, including the loss of limbs, extreme hospitalization, and in a few cases, death.
These accidents, for the most part, could be avoided if proper care and attention were placed on the safety of the children on board. A recent investigation by WTHR Channel 13 has uncovered that as many as 49% of buses in some of the school districts have failed to pass the yearly inspections, some with severe issues like brake and steering problems.
How can we overlook and neglect the safety of our children in such a dramatic fashion? The protection of our children must come before the greed of companies trying to save a few dollars on regular bus repairs and safety protocol, but how can this be accomplished when many of the bus services are not run directly by the school district, but are instead run by independent bus companies?
The state of Indiana requires that every bus in service be put through rigorous inspections at least once per year, and these inspections are performed by Indiana State Troopers. However, even with these inspections, many of the buses are still failing their inspections and being put back into service anyway. Requirements are too lax, and no one is holding bus programs responsible. In light of these issues, parents and concerned citizens will have to step up and bring more awareness to this issue if we truly want our children to be safe.
