Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month Started With a Crash
Indiana state officials declared that the month of May should be recognized as Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month in Indiana. Ironically, the start of that month coincided with a major motorcycle crash involving two bikes.
Three motorcycle riders were seriously injured when they were hit by a speeding car at 30th and Emerson. Eyewitnesses report that the traffic light at the intersection had just turned green when a car hit the motorcycles from behind. One of the motorcycles had a pillion rider. The seemingly minor accident became worse when one of the bikes burst into flames and its rider was caught in the fire, and sustained critical burn injuries as a result. Of the other two victims, one sustained neck injuries and the other a broken leg.
About 75 percent of all motorcycle accidents are multiple-vehicle accidents, and in two out of every three of these cases, the driver of the other vehicle violated the motorcyclist’s right of way. In a majority of the cases, the driver of the larger vehicle simply does not see the motorcycle.
Through the Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month, the Governor and the ABATE of Indiana worked to spread awareness on the need for motorists to check twice for motorcyclists when entering intersections. Furthermore, motorcycle riders were given training on how to safely operate the vehicle, especially on how to navigate curves, which is where many motorcycle accidents occur. It is the hope that proper education of motorcyclists can assist in the reduction of motorcycle accidents.
