Crash on I-465 Involved Two Semi-Trucks, a Work Vehicle, and Pickup Truck
Indiana State Police reported three people were left in critical condition
due to an evening pileup, chain reaction accident on I-465 involving two
semi-trucks, a U.S. Mail truck, and a pickup truck. Three of the drivers
were critically injured, and the fourth driver involved in the crash had
minor injuries. Initial reports show a semi-truck became disabled in the
center lane of the I-465 when a U.S. Mail truck slammed into its back.
The mail truck was then sent directly into the path of another semi, positioning
an oncoming pickup truck to crash into both of the stopped vehicles. The
stalled semi-truck driver involved in the initial crash was then lodged
inside his cab and it took more than 10 minutes for emergency crews to
rescue him. He was then transported in critical condition. Two other men
were transported in critical condition and found outside of their vehicles,
possibly from being ejected.
Just hours after this pile-up crash occurred, a driver died in a secondary
crash in the backup of the first. To avoid a deadly secondary crash or
interstate accident we want to offer these simple tips to encourage road
users to become better I-465 drivers.
10 Ways Hoosiers Can Become Better I-465 Drivers
With major interstates stretching from bordering Kentucky, through Indianapolis,
to the northwestern Calumet Region and part of the Chicago metropolitan
area, there is no doubt drivers will encounter risky driving hazards at
all times of the year on I-465. If you need to travel the interstate,
do you best to watch out for each other, stay alert and practice these
10 accident reducing driving behaviors.
- Take extra care to pay attention and expect the unexpected. Traffic patterns
can change without notice. - Distracted driving has become a crisis on all roadways but it remains a
leading cause of a majority of I-465 crashes. Don’t text or talk
on the phone and avoid taking your hands off the wheel. - Watch for speed limit reductions, narrowing lanes, changing traffic patterns,
and highway workers. - Respect the posted speed limits and merge as soon as safely possible as
this will allow traffic to flow smoothly. Speeding and aggressive driving
are major causes of interstate crashes. - Keep a safe distance on all sides of your vehicles and maintain a safe
following distance. Rear-end collisions are the most common type of interstate
crash related to bottleneck traffic. - Big trucks often travel I-465 routes. Watch out for them and obey their guidance.
- Pay attention to signage that may be giving accurate information and important
warnings on what to expect ahead. - Expect delays and allow extra travel time to navigate known busy and congested
areas. If possible, select alternate routes to avoid the congested I-465
completely. - Alcohol and drugs impair both judgement and reaction time. There is no
safe limit for drinking or drugging before driving. If your medication
carries a warning, take it seriously. - Sleep can be a true preventative measure against becoming involved in a
serious accident or fatal crash. Be prepared to make alternate plans if you are
too drowsy to drive and acknowledge that tired driving is dangerous.
From knowing to how to pass safely and recognizing the importance of being
a patient driver who is alert and off their phone, this accident reducing
risk advice might also save a life. Please share it with others.
